AquaMermaid School Review
As most readers know, my daughter, Avery, and I love mermaids. I wanted to try this mermaid fitness class I read about hosted by AquaMermaid; however, there is not one near us in the middle of central Georgia. However, AquaMermaid classes are in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Quebec and Ottawa. I got to thinking, I know someone who lives in Las Vegas, my Sister-in-Law, Jenny. She could totally go try this class out for us! In short, Jenny agreed to take the class in exchange for some kisses from her niece Avery.
The call came in on Wednesday morning, “hey Jen, want to take a mermaid swim class?” I happily agreed thinking only of the immense admiration and of the amount of kisses that I would get from my 4-year-old niece when she found out that auntie was going to swim like a mermaid. On a separate note, be sure to negotiate and collect your kisses before you agree! Then the reality set in, you have to wear a bathing suit (yea totally not a swim suit wearing person), wear a mermaid tail and monofin (not even sure what that is yet), and swim in a public pool (yea, I don’t typically do pools, especially not public pools). Ummmmmm….what!? I go where Ashley sends me so here we go……
My class was on a Saturday afternoon, at 2 pm, at the Municipal Pool in downtown Las Vegas. I am not going to lie, I was nervous about this entire class especially wearing a monofin. These classes are between $48 to $60 each or they have some package deals available too for birthday parties, bachelor parties and more. The facility looked well maintained and there was a life-guard on duty the whole time. I met the others for my class on the side of the pool where we were fitted with our monofin and mermaid tails.
Our instructor, Kat, was very friendly and helpful. There was a mix of people with different ages and abilities. I met a very nice woman who was there with her son as part of their New Year’s resolution to get healthy and fit. There were four younger girls around their early 20s having a fun girl’s day. Our class had seven students in all.
We started doing some stretches and exercises to learn the dolphin swim movement. There were a lot of crunches involved since you primarily use your core muscles to swim. Then we each swam across the length of the pool so Kat could assess our swimming abilities. I am pretty out of shape so after my swim across I elected to get out and walk back to the other side. I had to save my energy for getting this tail on!
I am just going to say it, there is no graceful way to get a mermaid tail on. First you put your feet in the monofin and make sure to tighten the straps around your heels very well. Then, the stretchy fabric part of the tail goes over the fin and is pulled up to your waist. The best way to get into the pool is to sit on the side, move all way to the edge and kind of jump in.
We practiced our dolphin swim movements in the water and took turns swimming back and forth. I had fun leisurely going back and forth from one end of the pool to the other. The repetitive movement through the water was very Zen like. I used my pool noodle the whole time so I didn’t get too out of breath. This way of swimming uses your core muscles extensively. It is a good overall workout and fun too. I definitely felt like I had worked out after the class was over.
Being a Mermaid is tough you guys!! I could totally understand why Ariel would trade her voice for some legs (forget about the prince)! I am grateful and happy to have had this fun experience and want to thank AquaMermaid for the class. If you have always wanted to be a mermaid, just want a fun workout, have a unique mermaid party…. I recommend you try it at least once. This class is a great alternative to the same old boring workouts. Also, it is a great opportunity to get some cool mermaid pictures of yourself. Now, if you will excuse me I have to go collect on some payment kisses from my baby girl….and I have the pictures to prove to her that I did it!!
