Cove Smart – DIY Home Security System
If you are like me, you are concerned with the safety and security of you home and family. My home came with a cookie cutter security system installed but it did not include monitoring, and as I learned after multiple sensor and control board failures, was very poor quality. As I searched for solutions, products from the bigger companies were just too expensive – from the equipment cost to monitoring. That really pointed us toward DIY systems and ultimately to Cove Smart Security where we intend to stay!
Let me start by saying that my husband (Mr. Spenderella) is very much the “Tim the Toolman Taylor”. He thinks he can fix or install anything, and make everything “better”. In the end most times, it would have been easier and cheaper to do it the right way. When our old alarm was going bad, he installed a bunch of “upgrades” over the course of three months to make it all work again. He spent countless nights after the kids were asleep installing and configuring apps, devices, sensors, etc. to get our old alarm to work most of the time but if the power or internet goes out, so does the alarm. I am happy to say that experience with our alarm from Cove is literally the opposite!
Our alarm system from Cove was shipped quickly, I’m talking like 2 days quick after we configured the system online to match our house, which was very easy. All you have to do is, go to Covesmart.com and click the “build my system” button. You will be guided through a very simple process that will gather information and configure your alarm with exactly what type of features you are interested in to how many remotes you want. The best part is, after you build the system online, it is configured at the factory so all you have to do is plug in the touch panel and hang the sensors.
Installing the Cove system was about as easy as it could be. I think my husband took longer comparing where on the door he wanted to put the sensors than he did installing and bringing the whole Cove system online. Once he had figured out where he wanted everything, the entire install took under 15 minutes. To begin, we plugged in the touch panel, which comes with every alarm, and followed the on-screen instructions. Of note, the touch panel has a battery backup and all the sensors are battery powered (no power, no WiFi…no problem!) After it completes it’s initial startup and establishes a connection with the monitoring station, we took each sensor out of the box to install them one by one. As each is removed and “opened” the system will say which sensor was just opened, back door, front door, etc. (…remember how I said everything was configured at the factory!?!) After all the sensors were installed, we were connected to the monitoring service that confirmed our code-word that we set up online when the system was built on the website and answered any questions that we had, he also told us that for the following two hours we could play/test the system without triggering an actual alarm so we could get comfortable with it’s operation.
Day to day use of Cove, is very simple and straight forward. On the main touch panel there are two options for arming the system: home and away. The home option will monitor all external sensors and ignore motion sensors, the away option will monitor all sensors. When triggered, the alarm is VERY loud and the system will notify the monitoring station via a cellular connection.
- Cove is a DIY home security system with 24/7 professional monitoring at only $15/mo. It is the quality of the big guys like ADT and Vivint, but half the cost. With Cove, you can protect your home from burglars, fires, floods, and CO.
- Cove has two great ways to pay for your system. The first is the Value Plan. With the Value Plan, you buy you equipment upfront, and only pay $15 or $25 a month.
- The second is the Economy Plan which allows people to buy Cove for $0 down, up to $400, and their monitoring goes up $10 a month to either $25 or $35 a month.
- On top of all the great price, Cove is compatible with Alexa and Google Home/Nest so you can integrate Cove in to your smart home.
- Most DIY systems don’t have Smash and Grab Protection, which prevents burglars from bypassing the alarm by simple smashing or unplugging the alarm and removing the batteries. Cove does have Smash and Grab Protection.
